Introduction to FoM

The Faculty of Management (FOM), Tribhuvan University has its ultimate objective of educating students for professional pursuits in business, industry and government. It is further dedicated to contributing to an increase in the knowledge and understanding of business and public administration. FOM aims to develop a networking with management institutes in the country and abroad to exchange new knowledge, technology, and methods of achieving higher level efficiency in management of business and public entities. It also aims to continuously innovate and promote cost-effective, socially relevant, modern technology based educational programs in Nepal.

The FOM offers instructions leading to Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS), Bachelor of Travel and Tourism Management (BTTM), Bachelor of Hotel Management (BHM), Bachelor of Information Management (BIM), Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Post Graduate Diploma in Police Sciences (PGDPS), Master of Business Studies (MBS), Master of Public Administration (MPA), and Master of Travel and Tourism Management (MTTM). The FOM also offers Master of Philosophy in Management (M.Phil.) and doctoral program in management leading to a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).

Mission Statement
Raising academic and professional excellence in management through teaching, training and research is guiding philosophy of the Faculty of Management. It believes that disseminating and updating management knowledge and competency in a fast-paced business world by developing strong associations with public and private sector establishments of the country and abroad instill in raising the academic excellence. Imparting management education to a large number of students through common purpose program at titular costs in one hand and budding managerial competency within students of certain segments through special purpose program at actual costs on the other hand is a tradition of delivering the academic and professional programs of the FoM in Nepal.

Goals
Prepare professional managers capable of handling business in a dynamic global environment

Produce socially responsible and creative entrepreneurs capable of promoting business and industry for the socio-economic development of Nepal

Conduct research and management development programs for updating the knowledge and skill base of academics and practicing managers

Innovate and promote management programs catering to the various social and economic sectors of Nepal

Establish linkage with leading universities and management institutes abroad and collaborate with them in program development and implementation

Timeline
The odyssey of FoM begins with a modest education program in commerce from Trichandra College, Kathmandu in the year 1954. As the only first college of the country, it enjoyed privilege of running Intermediate of Commerce (I.Com.) and Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) programs in the beginning. The college was affiliated to Indian University wherein the curriculum and examination matters of the programs were accordingly tied until the establishment of Tribhuvan University.

After the establishment of Tribhuvan University in the year 1959 in Kathmandu as the first University of the country, the matters of curriculum and examinations came within the purview of it.

Tribhuvan University that marked its Golden Jubilee in 2009 has experienced changes in the structure and the nomenclature of academic degrees of management education it conferred overtime. Started under a department, the management education passed through institute and to the faculty at present. The years 1973 and 2000 have however remained important historically. In 1973, Master of Public Administration was launched. Similarly the era of introduction of professional program started through launching of Bachelor of Information Management and then after Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Hotel Management, Bachelor of Travel and Tourism Management, Post-Graduate Diploma in Police Sciences and Master of Travel and Tourism Management. Besides the FoM has research-based academic program like M.Phil. and Ph.D.

In line with the diversified national and global needs, FoM intends to design and deliver programs that are suitable to the fast-paced society.

International Relations
FoM has a rich history of exchange programs and collaborative arrangements with leading industrial and business houses, management institutions, professional associations, and Universities around the world.

FoM is a permanent member of Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA) and involved in collaborative efforts regularly.

The Faculty has signed Memorandum of Understanding with Department of Organization Theory and Administration, University of Bergen, Norway and working towards national, regional and international cooperation in public affairs management and research alike.

In line with maintaining academic and professional link, the Faculty is sponsoring two candidates each year to participate in Program for the Development of Management Faculties (PDMF) of Indian Institute of Management, Ahamedabad (IIMA).

Inviting scholars and professors from SAARC region for guest lecturers and conduction of viva-voce examination of Ph.D. candidates thereupon strengthening the bondage of relationships with academics from reputed universities has also been a regular phenomenon of the Faculty.

Faculty Board
As an academic entity FoM has Faculty Board (FB) of its own. Faculty Board of FoM is entrusted with the tasks of designing, enhancing and approving different academic programs as per societal needs. Besides, FB is actively involved in devising modalities of teaching/learning and research activities in campuses under the Faculty. At present, FB consists of 30 members including the chairperson and member secretary. The Standing Committee of the Faculty Board has also been designed to act regularly and deal with routine issues as and when required.

Subject Committee
Based upon the diversified subjects taught under different academic programs of the faculty, a total of nine Subject Committees are formed. Subject Committees are concerned with developing and updating respective subjects under their purview. The list of committees is as follows:

Research Committee
To lure research activities in the areas of management and public administration and thereupon contribute for research-based teaching/learning process and enhance the quality of education, Research Committee has been functional under the Faculty of Management. The Research Committee comprises of ten members including the chairperson and the member secretary.

Central Department and
Colleges/Campuses

An entity initiating Intermediate of Commerce and Bachelor of Commerce in the year 1954 has now twenty eight (28) Constituent Campuses imparting eight different programs at Intermediate, Bachelor and Master levels across the country. There are two (2) Central Departments actively involved in the field of management and public administration education.

Central Department of Management

The Department is located within University Campus at Kirtipur and delivers Master of Business Studies (MBS) program.

The department is located in the heart of Kathmandu City at Jamal and delivers Master of Public Administration (MPA) program.

Constituent Campuses

Trichandra Campus was the first constituent college imparting education to the intermediate and bachelor level students of commerce. After the introduction of NESP, the Commerce education started in Trichandra Campus was taken over by Shanker Dev Campus. As of now (end of 2009) the total number of Constituent Campuses imparting management education under FoM is twenty eight (28).

Affiliated Campuses

Pursuance to the principle of “education first”, the FoM started giving affiliation to the private and community colleges from the year1979. The number of affiliated colleges as of now (end of 2009) has reached to 506. The Affiliated Colleges are imparting Bachelor and Master level programs to the students of MBS, MTTM, PGDPS, BBS, BBA, BIM, BHM and BTTM.
